The short version. SnapDown has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no telemetry. Your library, your settings and the media you save stay on your Mac. This website sets no cookies and runs no tracking scripts.
The app
What stays on your Mac
- Your media, in Movies › SnapDown or a folder you choose. Edits are saved beside the originals.
- Your library: a SQLite database, thumbnails, transcripts and unsaved editor drafts, in
~/Library/Application Support/SnapDown. That folder also holds your settings and a log of the links gallery-dl was asked for, capped at 1 MB. - API keys and storage credentials, in your macOS login Keychain. They are never written to a plain file.
What leaves your Mac, and when
- The sites you download from. When you paste a link, SnapDown asks that site for the page and the media, the same way a browser would. Previews in the queue load thumbnails from the site’s own image servers.
- Cookies, only if you turn them on. With Settings › Downloader Cookies set to a browser, that browser’s cookies for the site are read on your Mac and sent to that site alone, as the browser itself would send them. To find the profile you’re signed in with, SnapDown looks at cookie names and hosts only, never their values. It’s off by default.
- GitHub, for updates. The app checks GitHub for a new release when it starts, every 30 minutes, and when its window comes back into focus. An update is downloaded only when you choose to install it. The bundled yt-dlp checks GitHub for a new version at most once a day. GitHub receives your IP address with these requests.
- OpenAI or Groq, only for transcription. When you transcribe something, or turn on automatic transcription in a profile, SnapDown sends a compressed copy of that file’s audio, never the video, to the provider you chose, using your own API key and under your agreement with them. With a key saved, opening Settings also checks with the provider that the key works.
- Your own storage, only for backup. Files you back up go to the Cloudflare R2 or S3-compatible bucket you configure, and System Health checks that it can connect.
- Google Fonts. The app loads fonts from Google Fonts to preview caption styles, so Google receives your IP address with that request.
What SnapDown doesn’t do
- No accounts, sign-ups or logins.
- No analytics, telemetry or crash reporting.
- No ads, and nothing about you is sold or shared.
- It never reads the pages you have open in your browser.
This website
- snapdownapp.com is a set of static pages served by Cloudflare. It sets no cookies and loads no analytics or tracking scripts.
- Cloudflare processes each request, including your IP address, to deliver the site and protect it from abuse, and keeps request logs for a few days to diagnose problems.
- The Download button looks up the newest release on GitHub and sends you there; the app itself is downloaded from GitHub, which sees that request.
Your choices
- Remove an API key or storage credential in Settings at any time, or turn Downloader Cookies off.
- To remove everything, quit SnapDown, then delete the app,
~/Library/Application Support/SnapDownand, if you want your media gone too, Movies › SnapDown. API keys can be removed from Keychain Access by searching for SnapDown.
Changes
If what SnapDown or this site does with data changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top moves.
